Congratulations to Isla Wilkinson, Arlo Oliver and Alena Zhu from Room 7 at Hillcrest Normal School who have won the Year 5 and 6 category in the Mean Green House competition – a national competition run by Genesis Energy. The students designed and made a scale model of an energy efficient and sustainable house. Their winning design considered sun positioning, lighting efficiency and even included a living green roof. The students each win an Edison Robot as well as a class set for the school. Here is their winning video:
To help them explore a range of sustainable energy and building concepts students, and their teacher Stacey Vowles, invited experts from the local energy, building and construction community. They also visited Hukanui School “Living room” ecological classroom and Bunnings. The learning was done through the style of Mantle of the Expert where the children worked with a local architect and received a “commission”. These students and their peers ran a workshop on this learning and design process at our recent Everything is Connected Children’s event. (see slide show).
