Whitebait season is upon us. And around the country people are relishing the thought of delicious whitebait patties, while others are dreading the thought, knowing full well that these tiny critters are under threat of extinction.
It’s a sad fact and it is linked to a multitude of factors including habitat loss, degradation of water quality and over-fishing.
If you are exploring water quality, habitat loss and/or native species in the classroom, the whitebait debate is a great hook to sink your teeth into. There are no simple answers and a good way to explore the big idea that ‘Everything is Connected’.
